My career as an artist has gone through many different stages over the years. I began with realist self-portraits, moved on to still-lifes (usually based on organic materials). These days I am mainly painting landscape. This landscape is often shrouded in mist and I love the muted colour and the soft contours that emerge – lending an air of mystery and ambiguity.
I seek out the silence of wild rural places with minimal evidence of humankind. Places where the beauty of nature is restrained – not too obviously scenic. In these paintings I am trying to capture the ethereal feeling that these landscapes engender. I use thin layers of oil paint with hardly any perceptible texture – often finishing with tinted charcoal when the oil has dried. I generally use gessoed wooden panels as they work better for detail and mixed media.
